                           The Mark Of Vishnu

                                                                                       - Khushwant Singh

Introduction:

Khushwant Singh was a longtime journalist and his article on politics and economics are respected even today. His sense of humor is remarkable. In the story "Mark of Vishnu" he exposes the superstition of an old age Brahmin.

Offer of milk to kala Nag:
Old Gunga Ram had the habit of leaving a saucer of milk every evening outside the hole of Kala Nag. The next day the saucer would be fond empty. The naughty boys of the house claimed that cats must drink the milk. Gunga ram contented that cats would not dare to go the snake's hole.

Capture of Gunga ram's Kala Nag:
Rains had flooded Kala nag's hole one day. It was a six feet long. Its body was fleshy and rounded. One of the boys suggested that they could get the King Cobra. Even before the Kala Nag could sent the impending threat  to its life, the boys will surrounded with long bamboo poles. It spat in anger on all sides and made for the banana grove in lightning speed. Even before the snake could move in the slippery and muddy soil, one stick caught in the middle and broke its bone. The victorious gang lifted it was the end of the pole and placed it carefully in a biscuit tin. They closed the tin and tied with a string. They had spared the hood of the cobra unhurt perhaps to prove that they had captured a cobra.

Shocking disclosure:
That morning the milk was untouched. Gunga Ram was anxious about his Kala Nag. When The boys were leaving for school by bus, one of the boy held a small tin outside and shouted that Gunga Ram's snake was inside the tin.

Last ditch effort of Gunga ram:
Gunga Ram took some milk and ran fast to the school. By the time he reached the school, the classroom drama was over. His Kala Nag, through mortally wounded, was alive. It was trying to escape the classroom. In a prayerful attitude Gunga Ram kept at his head at the entrance of the classroom. The  snake deeming him as obstacle and threat, bit him all over his face and escaped from the place.

Mark of Vishnu:
Kala Nag had bitten him so much that he was blinded instantly. In a few minutes, his body turned blue. Blood spots on Gunga Ram's forehead. The teacher knelt and wiped out the blood strain with a kerchief. The fangs of his Kala Nag had left the Mark "v" on his forehead.

Conclusion:
Gunga Ram had great reverence for all living things. He Believed Kala Nag to be a manifestation of Lord Vishnu. Yet he was ironically killed by the same snake. His tragic death drives home the point that blind Superstitious are dangerous.
